Threesomes in Gaming: HYPERCRONIUS Wasn’t the First

One of the things that my games often get criticized for is the inclusion of pretty explicit sex. In fact, in my first game–HYPERCRONIUS–there’s a full on threesome (and there might even be more in the game…wink wink) between the lead character and two women. While the response that I received from putting this in the game was largely positive, there were plenty of others that weren’t so pleased with it being in the game at all.

And I get it, the popular stigma that “video games are just for kids” is still permeating the atrocity that is Western Culture, and probably isn’t going to totally go away for at least another decade, if not longer. So seeing sex in a video game can still be a shock for the unprepared.

Now, of course, if you look at the game description on this site, I made it very plain that this game includes “sexual adult content”, either some didn’t read it, or they were just shocked that a threesome would be in a video game.

Despite what some were thinking, this is not the first time such a thing existed within an RPG. With series like “The Witcher”, and others, certainly it isn’t anything new anymore, either. But it was done many years ago, and for the mainstream “gaming public”, it seems to have largely slipped under the radar back in 2007.

Enter…the dragon!

Okay, not actually “the dragon”, but I couldn’t resist saying that since it’s relative. But, actually, enter…Jade Empire.

What was/is a Microsoft original–and initially only available on the original Xbox–Jade Empire is a game that easily sits in my Top 12 games of all-time (“Top 12” because I use Base-12 math…deal with it). It is a 3D RPG made by the masters at Bioware, and it gives you a lot of freedom as far as choosing to be a man or woman, good or evil, and most importantly…who you can love. And then, not just “who you can love”, but how many people you can love. It’s a fantastic game, and I think the potential for lesbian relationships, bisexual relationships, and even polyamorous relationships may be a first. See for yourself…

Of course, my own game–HYPERCRONIUS–is still unique in what it presented, and is far more explicit in that two women and one man have a very tribal, polyamorous relationship. Also, I’m pretty sure it’s the first one to show sex (let alone a threesome) in 2D, 16-bit RPG gameplay. So I still think HYPERCRONIUS stands out from the pack, absolutely.

But, proudly for me, it is merely a rarity in a growing line of art and video games that aren’t afraid to show non-traditional relationships, and show homosexuality, and to break free from conservative sensibilities about what can be explicit or implicit. I couldn’t be happier to be on the bleeding edge in gaming for that.

My future games–HYPERCRONIUS II, and others–will also include very explicit sex, and in very unconventional, non-traditional ways, at that. As I release these games for other platforms like OS X, iOS, and Android, it will be interesting to see if the various app stores and repositories will even allow the games I create to be available. But I’ll certainly do my best to break new ground in the attempt. And hopefully, over time, games from Zomia Offline Games won’t be the only ones doing this on a regular basis.

Because if Microsoft is willing to put a threesome into a video game….

Carpe lucem!
